All pictures where taken during our trip in February 2000

Highway east of Neiba

First stop at Lago Enriquillo: Las Caritas, dozens of chiselled Taino faces. This has been a holy place of the Tainos and hideaway of chief Enriquillo.

It is really worth climbing up the rough path. From up there one has a great view of the lake. We spotted a crocodile near the shore and later arranged a boat to look for it.

Iguanas, which are living on the terrain of the national park

“Our” crocodile: After talking to the national park people, we could go on a special boat-tour to look for the animal we have seen before. We were very lucky, as most people leave the lake without seeing one.

40 meters below sea-level: Lago Enriquillo

Some kilometers east of Duvergé this monument reminds of Enriquillo

View from the mountains near Polo Magnetico to the shallow Laguna del Rincon.

Back at the coast south of Barahona: The town of Paraiso.

LE11

View of the coast from our hotel “Casa Bonita”. The hotel is nicely located, but much too expensive compared to the standard (room with breakfast about 110 US$), not mentioning the 15 cm centipede in our bed the first night.

Finally a stop at a larimar-cutter. Near Baoruco are the only mines where the semi-precious stone is found.

Below: Using only his hands to cut the stones with a circular saw into 1 cm slices
